History / Inspiration
The Snellen chart began as a simple way to measure someone's vision. The tests — named after their inventor — became popular in the 1860s and still hang in doctors' offices today. If you can read the 8th line from across the room, you pass the test with 20/20 vision.
This Oaklandish chart spells out a message of local love, Snellen-style. Use it to diagnose the origins of the various Bay Area residents you encounter. If someone can recognize it from across the street, they're almost certainly an Oakland local. If they don't get it until they're up close, they might just be from San Francisco. Anyone who doesn't recognize the oak tree when it's right in front of them is designated "locally blind." We recommend escorting them to the nearest A's game, BART station, or soul food joint for immediate intervention.
