Michael Wertz’s new book is now available at the Oaklandish downtown and Dimond shops!
‘ABC Oakland’ is one of the only—if not the only—picture books about the city of Oakland. It highlights landmarks and themes that exemplify Oakland’s unique culture, from the myriad food trucks on International Boulevard to giant redwoods that stretch up to the sky. Wertz, an assistant professor of illustration at California College of the Arts and longtime Oakland resident, beautifully conveys the city’s energetic and wonderfully diverse atmosphere, and both children and adults alike will be charmed by his rhyming text and bold, whimsical prints.
“Staying true to our mission of spreading local love and supporting the greater Oakland community, Oaklandish has partnered with Heyday to create a one-of-a-kind children’s ABC book,” said Oaklandish CEO Angela Tsay. “This book is an imaginative platform helping children learn about Oakland’s history, beauty, and cultural diversity.”
“The wonders of this astonishing (and complicated) city by the San Francisco Bay are richly conveyed in this charming book about a much-maligned and often misunderstood Oakland, and Heyday couldn’t be prouder of our collaboration with Oaklandish to bring its marvels to the attention of readers everywhere,” said Steve Wasserman, Heyday’s publisher/executive director.
As part of each organization’s mission to provide outreach to their communities, Heyday and Oaklandish will donate 179 copies of ‘ABC Oakland’ to the city of Oakland’s public kindergarten classrooms, that’s one for every classroom!
Oaklandish will host a book signing and launch party on Saturday, April 29 at 5:00 p.m. The event will take place at Oaklandish’s flagship store at 1444 Broadway, and will be free and open to the public. Oaklandish-branded apparel will be available for purchase, including a T-shirt featuring one of the designs from ‘ABC Oakland’. For more information, check out the event write up here!
