The University of California doesn't have an Oakland campus. But everyone who passes through this town receives a renegade education. Social justice, civil rights, urban renewal — these might be academic issues to some people. In Oakland, they're the stories that unfold on our streets and shores every day.
Maybe that's why so many of our hometown heroes are self-taught. They couldn't find a discipline that suited them, so they invented their own.This is where Bruce Lee pioneered the Way of the Intercepting Fist, and Isadora Duncan elevated dance to high art. And sure, Cal might have its own law school, but Oakland's own Hell's Angels were the first to defeat the FBI in court. Besides, those other UC schools are just lucky they don't have to play us in football.
This city might not have issued you a diploma. But it certainly gave you an education. Show some school spirit in classic Oakland colors.
