Before it arrived on the baseball diamond, the raglan tee got its start on the battlefield. The style was named after a British general who lost his arm during the Battle of Waterloo. After the amputation, the Baron of Raglan began wearing coats with the sleeves sewn directly to the collar — the looser armholes kept the clothes from bunching around his missing limb. The style soon became popular with athletes, especially baseball players.
Just as raglan tees are synonymous with baseball, the Athletics are emblems of Oakland. In the 1960s, team owner Charles Finley changed the team's colors from red, white and blue to "Kelly Green, Wedding Gown White and Fort Knox Gold." They might not be the easiest colors to pull off — but then again, the A's aren't always the easiest team to love. No matter what, East Bay expats are always looking for a flash of green and gold when they're away from home— either on the street or across the bar.
