At 5 years old, Oakland Art Murmur beats louder than ever. On July 1, the Oaklandish store opening will be just one event in another dazzling First Friday lineup. The usual roster of galleries and vendors will be open for business and merriment — but this is an especially good month for original Oakland style. From 6 till at least 11, the intersection of Broadway and Telegraph will be packed with DJs, drinks, and Oakland-made objects.
Across the street, the folks at the brand-new store Oakollectiv will be throwing their own First Friday party from 7 am – 11 pm, with live music from Kara Alexis Young and DJ Leydis. Just steps away, Urban Stitch will be camping out in the grand old Cathedral Building at 1615 Broadway from 6 – 10.
Since 2006, the First Friday event has gained Oakland lots of media attention, and the roster of participating galleries keeps expanding. The event draws people from all over the bay, and around the world &mdash and it’s expanded to a Saturday morning stroll for folks who can’t make it out on Fridays.
And soon, the Oaklandish store will carry the winning design from the Art Murmur t-shirt contest. Here’s a sneak peek of the design by Rene Fuen — proceeds will go towards making future Art Murmurs even louder and brighter.
