Backpack giveaway at Franklin Elementary

This past Monday, August 22nd, 2016, we were happy to participate in another backpack giveaway for OUSD elementary students.

The giveaway took place at Franklin Elementary in East Oakland, one of the most diverse and successful elementary schools in the entirety of the Oakland Unified School District!

All of the students at Franklin Elementary received a customized Oaklandish backpack, full of supplies for the upcoming school year, in a ceremony held in the school’s cafeteria.

If you kept your eyes open you could find District 2 councilman Abel Guillen, District 2 Board Director Aimee Eng, District 4 Board vice President Nina Senn, and even Oakland’s Mayor Libby Schaaf! Overall the support was amazing! Oaklandish would like to specifically thank all the volunteers from Kaiser and Target, who helped pack all the backpacks for the Franklin Elementary student body, and our partner K to College who helped oversee the entire process.

The second event in two years was a success and even had local news coverage from various stations, including Telemundo!

Following The Oakland’s Promise‘s mission to encourage the next generation of leaders, activists and productive citizens and community members, we felt privileged to partake in the process.

We will continue to provide updates for our community events focusing on the Oakland educated!
