This month, Oaklandish is pleased to announce that Youth Business USA is our July Nonprofit of the Month.
Youth Business USA is an Oakland-based nonprofit that supports low-income youth and youth of color to build their own businesses — starting from an idea, to crafting their pitch, to developing a quality product or service and the ability to establish a customer base. Youth Business USA recognizes the obstacles young people, particularly underrepresented groups, encounter in the job market, as a result of a lack of resources, support, and other structural inequalities. Over 95% of Youth Business USA’s youth entrepreneurs are low income youth, women, and people of color.
Through entrepreneurial education adapted specifically for young adults, business coaching, one-on-one mentoring, pro-bono professional services, and connecting young people with local, low-cost resources, this Oakland org helps the next generation launch an idea and convert it into a successful business. To date, Youth Business USA has supported the launch of 29 small businesses, 34 young entrepreneurs, helped create 49 jobs, and trained over 113 aspiring youth entrepreneurs. Youth Business USA even provides entrepreneurs with interest free loans, up to $10,000, to launch or grow their new business.
We’re hosting an in-store event at the Oaklandish Dimond shop (3419 Fruitvale Ave.) on July 15th. Stop by from 12 to 4 pm to learn more about how Youth Business USA’s empowers young entrepreneurs to build their own businesses.
Ten percent of the day’s proceeds will be donated directly to support Youth Business USA as they help the underrepresented youth of today get their new businesses off the ground.
