The second annual Town Eats was a tremendous success this past weekend! Between the kickoff on Friday night, the pig roast on Saturday and Tomatotopia on Sunday, the weekend was full of good music, good food and happy faces!
Saturday was a tremendous success. With the sounds of the DJ collective Soul Delicious in the background, the three-way pig roast competition between Lungomare, Chop Bar and Chris Pastena did not disappoint. Lungomare’s ‘mulefoot’ pig combined smoked porchetta, saffron fregula sarda, cauliflower, snap peas, cipollini onion and red bell pepper agrodulce to form a wonderfully tasting combo. The Chop Bar pig was whole roasted pig inside a pig with a pineapple and sausage stuffing paired with a cabbage slaw and a surprisingly spicy habanero secret salsa. Chris Pastena, who owns Lungomare and Chop Bar, decided to personally participate in the event and paired his whole roasted pig with a green lentil salad, smoked fennel, a house made 2-year aged red vinegar, apple, applewood smoked bacon and a salsa verde.
After all the votes were counted, Lungomare’s chef Craig received the most praise for his ‘mulefoot’ pig. Although there could only be one winner it’s worth noting that all three pigs were delicious. In the words of Chris Pastena “we are all winners.” We certainly “won” many, many calories of pig and pig belly.
Sunday was a fun tomato-filled afternoon. Tomato breeders Baia Nicchia Farm and Wild Boar Farms joined forces with host Lungomare and Edible East Bay to present Tomatotopia, a tomato tasting event with specialty bloody marys, micheladas, and tomato bites.
Until next year, Oakland! Stay tuned for news on a bigger and even more spectacular Town Eats!
