Night Herons vs Displacement Tee
When Oakland declared the black-crowned night heron the city’s official bird in 2019, the resolution described the species as “a resilient bird with remarkable adaptability in urban areas.” In recent years, developers have removed some of the night herons’ favorite nesting trees, but the birds have defiantly refused to leave downtown Oakland. As the Golden Gate Audubon Society’s director said, “They won’t be evicted.”
This collaboration between Oaklandish, the local history podcast East Bay Yesterday, and artist T.L. Simons is a celebration of those who challenge displacement. As The Town continues to shift all around us, let the black-crowned night heron serve as inspiration.
