January Nonprofit of the Month: Loved Twice

January Nonprofit of the Month: Loved Twice

Loved Twice collects gently-used baby clothes (size 0-12 months), sorts these precious garments into boy and girl wardrobes-in-a-box, and distributes them exclusively through social workers in hospitals, shelters, and clinics. Their simple solution supports disadvantaged babies while reusing thousands of onesies, swaddling blankets, and babywear that would otherwise end up in landfills. 100% of collected baby clothes are given directly to newborns-in-need. Baby clothes are given to new mothers as they leave the hospital so that babies have clothes, blankets, and everything else they need as quickly as possible. In Oakland, you can donate baby clothes at Sleep Play Love located at 5377 College...

Brandon from YouthALIVE!

We received this message from our friends at YouthALIVE! and wanted to pass it along. Though we sometimes despair of the general state of the world, stories like this give us hope. Please join us in supporting YouthALIVE! Hi. I'm Brandon Lee Vega. I was born in East L.A. My family moved to Oakland when I was 13 because my mom was looking for a better paying job. I'm 19 now. We live in the Deep, also known as Deep East Oakland. My dad left when I was 7. When I needed him he wasn't there. When my dad left...

Thankful for Families

Right before Thanksgiving, we were lucky enough to be a part of the 2nd Annual Thankful for our Families Event at Frick Impact Academy, supplying 50 bags to hold holiday meals for families. Here's an except from Frick's Community School Manager:  These baskets included all that was needed for a complete holiday meal and were heavy; your donation allowed families to transport home with ease. Among those are families who are homeless, refugees, and who faced the challenges of meeting the rapidly increasing cost of rent in Oakland. These families have to face harsh realities in life on daily basis, and this often is especially challenging...

November Nonprofit of the Month: Level Playing Field Institute

Oaklandish is excited to announce that the November Nonprofit of the Month is Level Playing Field Institute, an Oakland-based organization working to eliminate the barriers that underrepresented people of color face in the STEM field. Founded in Oakland in 2001, Level Playing Field Institute (LPFI) envisions a world where the playing field is truly equitable and everyone, especially the historically disenfranchised, have access to the opportunities they seek. To do so, LPFI provides STEM education and support programs to students in middle school, high school, and college. One example of such programs is the SMASH, or Summer Math and Science Honors,...

This local nonprofit was founded in 2012 by five black male entrepreneurs and technologists discouraged by high rates of unemployment of black male youth in the Bay Area contrasted with the numerous job opportunities available in the nearby tech industry.
